Books about small towns, similar to Friday Night Lights and Last Picture Show
Would love to find books about small towns that have a lot of the same, archetypal characters. Like, the person who's still stuck in the past, the local rich guy, the local bar, etc…
Barbara Kingsolver’s *Demon Copperhead* is primarily set in southwest Virginia. I’m familiar with the region, and it’s quite accurate. The characters aren’t archetypal TV show types, though, but close to several I’ve known, including relatives.
James McBride’s *The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store* is mainly set in Pottstown, Pa., in the 1930s, and focuses on the African-American and Jewish communities.
Louise Erdrich’s *The Night Watchman* is mainly set in the Turtle Mountain Native American Reservation in North Dakota, in the 1950s as they fought against dispossession. A portion is in Minneapolis when a character goes in search of a sibling. It has several characters and features community dynamics.
