I’m looking for books set between the 1600s and 1800s with interactions between white indentured servants and black enslaved people. It doesn’t have to be romance or even friendship, I’m just curious to see how the two groups of people would interact in fiction.
I’m especially interested in books set in the 1600s/early 1700s, since indentured servants and slaves often worked alongside each other and faced similarly harsh conditions. During this time, they would run away together and attempt rebellions (Bacon’s Rebellion). After 1700, lawmakers began phasing out indentured servitude and relying on slavery more in order to stamp out this solidarity.
I’m most interested in books set in the colonial United States, but I’m also open to recs set in the Caribbean/West Indies.
