And I really don't understand all the hate these books get – I have read several posts about how this is the worst book people have ever read, etc.

Now, granted, there are a TON of predictable fantasy tropes used throughout, and some of the dialogue is eyeroll-worthy…but maybe it just says something about my current mental/emotional state that I rather enjoyed the brain break from slogging through Dune to just devour several hundred pages of faerie sex, violence, and occasional heroism 🤣

I don't know, I mean, I get that it isn't exactly the most highbrow literature out there, but I'm rather enjoying it – I am currently waiting on the last three books to be delivered tomorrow so I can find out what happens with the rest of the story!

I read the first book for an hour and while I found it unbearable I also can easily see why it has a huge audience of readers who absolutely have their expectations met.

    2. I will never understand the hate that popular books get. People act like it’s miserable to read and I don’t get it. I did stop the series but that’s bc I had a hard time getting into her with Rhys after the first book was all about Tamlin. But I don’t think the writing was bad. I think the plot was actually interesting and unique in a lot of ways

Book 1 is mediocre, but book 2 is actually pretty good so long as you manage expectations, IMO. The problem is most people don’t get through book 1 if they hate this sort of thing.

The next book is pretty bad and overlong as well, though I hear the ones focusing on her sister are decent.

    4. I was skeptical about the first book and took me a bit longer to read it. From the second book onward I fell in love with the series and I couldn’t put it down until I read each book. From what I read online, people mainly judge based on the first one and don’t want to continue reading the series.

    5. I read ACOTAR and it was OK. But I couldn’t get through her other big series at all. The writing is definitely YA level.

I was around for the first wave of twilight and it feels much the same. My wife is all in and that’s fine. It’s just not for me

    7. I mean no matter what people on Reddit say the series is popular for a reason, people enjoy reading it.

    8. I read ACOTAR and I genuinely wanted to like it, and I kind of did, but TBH (no disrespect to you) my problem with it is that everyone talks about it like it’s sooooo sexy and there’s deadass 1 sex scene in the first book?? I was ready to read like PAGES of erotic plot and tension throughout the whole thing and they literally bone once for like a paragraph??? And it’s like 300 pages in!!! I feel like everyone who calls it super sexual must have read a different book or lived a different life than me idk

    9. I mean idk if it’s hate, but I definitely don’t like the writing style, comes off as amateurish/young adult tier

The first two books I enjoyed but as I read the rest of the books and thought about the series, my opinion of it has gone down. I’d be interested to see what you think of the third and fifth books. I think SJM is just a lazy writer at this point.

    11. It’s because people get a sense of superiority in not liking the popular things. It’s not specific to literature but it is more intense.

    12. I read the first one and it just wasn’t for me. Fantasy is really hard for me to get into for whatever reason. I could see the appeal. (Yes i know the 2nd book is better and it gets better but I’m just not into it.) I want to be part of the Fandom though. It looks like fun lol. I wanted to enjoy the books so bad.

I’m currently reading The Grapes of Wrath (first time. No spoilers) and last year pretty much the only books I read were fun escapism. But it got me back into reading.
