I looooove romance but lately I have been only running into ones that just aren’t up to my standard of writing. I don’t mind some tropes and some cheesiness, and a medium amount of spice is okay too. I also love fantasy but again, I have been finding that many aren’t actually all that well written. I want something that feels real, and complicated characters.

    1. The Me Before You series is written well, though I wouldn’t recommend any of her other books. The Man Who Ate an Airplane is a great unconventional romance. 10,000 Doors of January is epic and a personal favorite romance.

    2. **Outlander**.

I’m a 37M who typically only reads Fantasy and SciFi, and I love the Outlander series (I’m on Book 5 currently). Beautiful prose, fascinating history, mysterious elements (time travel, etc), and complex characters. It is certainly a series anchored by romance, but it’s also SO much more.

*FWIW I have not watched the TV Show, so I cannot comment on that.

    5. Almost anything by Jennifer Crusie. My favorites are *Faking It* and *Bet Me*, and the romance/mystery she’s been doing with Bob Meyer the last couple of years have been GREAT. Trilogies, so more than a book, but not a commitment of 14 books like some wonderful paranormal romance that’s out there.
