I’m going to put myself out there a bit, but I really need a book that will shake me up. While I’ve managed to overcome serious addictions like drugs, alcohol, and smoking, I can’t seem to break free from the binge-eating cycle, no matter how hard I try.

I’m looking for a brutally honest book that can knock some sense into me—but in a hopeful, positive way. Something that reminds me that there’s always a way forward, no matter how bad things feel.

I’m in my late 20s, feeling pretty alone and kind of hopeless, but I want to read something relatable. Beautiful prose is really important to me, too.

    1. I just want to say you’re not alone in this💜

      I’d recommend:
The Recovering by Leslie Jamison – personal, beautifully written
Hunger by Roxane Gay – deeply relatable
Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen – eye-opening

I hope one of these resonates with you🤧

    2. If you’re open to novels as well and aren’t looking for self-help books exclusively I’d recommend The Outrun by Amy Liptrot! It’s a memoir and technically about overcoming alcoholism but I think the message is universally applicable (and in a way the cycle of binge-eating or binge-drinking and the shame that follows isn’t all that different, although I’ve only struggled with BED and never drunk so take my opinion with a pinch of salt!) and I found it really raw and realistic and hopeful. Fair warning It’s kind of natural history oriented though which is part of the reason I read it (and loved it as much as I did), but I hope you don’t find those bits too boring even if you aren’t particularly into birdwatching and the likes lol. You’ve got this!!! Sending you hugs!
