Hi everyone! I have recently enjoyed reading Cho Nam-joo's Kim Jiyoung, Sayaka Murata's Convenience Store Woman, Kwon Yeo-sun's Lemon, and I am looking for recommendations on similar books where the lives of the characters reflect South Korean or Japanese culture and society. Can anyone suggest me a good book in this sort of genre?

    1. There’s Shogun, obviously. But it’s long, long book and a big commitment.

Audition by Ryu Murakami is really good. It’s often described as a horror novel, but the majority of it is the reader trying to figure out what exactly is the deal with Yamasaki Asami.

The Last Yakuza is a semi-fictionalized biography of a Yakuza member. Think Goodfellas in Japan.
