Around this time every year I choose a longer book to read, something around the 1000 page mark. Over the last few years I’ve read:
1Q84 – wasn’t my favorite
The Pillars of the Earth – enjoyed it
Tai-Pan – enjoyed it
Shogun – enjoyed it
This year I have 4 books on the list and don’t know which to go with.
Musashi
World Without End
The Count of Monte Cristo
Nobel House
I know I would probably enjoy more Clavell and probably more Follett. Monte Cristo just seems daunting and I have no idea if I would enjoy Musashi but it’s more historical fiction and samurai so it can’t be that bad right? Need some guidance please!

Read the rest of the Kingsbridge series by Follett. *World Without End* and *A Column of Fire* are great. There is also a prequel, *The Evening and the Morning*, and a newer book.
Also if you haven’t read *Lonesome Dove*, you should consider it.
Definitely the Count of Monte Cristo. It gets good and stays good real quick.
Michener’s Chesapeake, Centennial or Texas
Rutherfurd’s Sarum
MM.Kaye’s The Far Pavilions
Gregory David Robert’s Shantarum
