so i'd love something with darker themes, a serious tone, highly psychological & mysterious, maybe some philosophical concepts added into the mix ex. existentialism. i'll take anything that resembles this idea with a bonus for quirky writing styles or surrealism or unconventional storytelling. HUGE bonus for lgbt characters. if you'd like some reference points it'll have to be in media outside of books, i just got into this and only have read "the bell jar" so far (loved it btw and it kinda does serve as a slight reference point). something aligned with neon genesis evangelion, mulholland drive or silent hill 2 would fit the bill i guess.

Try Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer or Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield!
Might try the Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.
The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen,
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy,
The hearts invisible Furies by John Boyne
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon is dark fiction, very unlike the others but lots of consideration of monsters vs men
