This was one of the first books I've read in a while, as I'm trying to get more into reading. I loved about 90% of this book, and felt that the other 10% was pretty unnecessary, so I'm not exactly looking for something that's a carbon copy.
What I liked about Norwegian Wood:
– The atmosphere was set perfectly, and it really captured the feelings of melancholy. I liked the mood that it puts you in. The writing style was super immersive
– I liked the book's themes of feeling lost, grief, sorrow, and being desensitized.
– The slice of life storytelling style — there's no one main overarching plotline, its simply a journey alongside the main character. I didn't mind the slower pacing, it left space for more details where I really felt like I could wander around in that world.
What I disliked about Norwegian Wood:
– Side characters (especially the women) often seemed one-dimensional
– Awkward and unnecessary sex scenes
I had read the Bell Jar earlier and I really liked it too, as I felt it touched on similar themes and had a similar descriptive and immersive narration style.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
