Does anyone know of any novels that are totally or mostly focused on what's happening in the present (and are also well-written*)?
I'm basically looking for as little backstory as possible, so the meaning and effectiveness of the story doesn't primarily depend on flashbacks/knowing what happened in the characters' lives before the story takes place.
I'm guessing this is most common in very commercial thrillers and adventure stories, but I'm hoping for something more literary, if it exists.
I'd prefer books written (but not necessarily set) in the last century.
*My definition of "good" is writing that doesn't treat me like I'm an idiot and hit me over the head with very simple stuff. And on the flipside of that, also doesn't pretend to be deeper and more profound than it is.
TIA!
