Best books on history? That was never my strong suit, and I wanted to change that. It can be any type of history matter, and from anywhere around the world.
I’m currently reading Fifth Sun by Camilla Townsend, a fantastic history of the Aztecs based on indigenous rather than Spanish sources. Very readable and highly recommended

100 GREAT KINGS, QUEENS AND RULERS OF THE WORLD by James Canning got me reading history in earnest after I started with THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY by Will Cuppy.

History is a vast field and it would be helpful to know a bit more about your interests.
In any case, I might send you toward the Cheese and the Worms. It’s an older work, published in the 1970s, that shows the world from the perspective of an Italian miller during the inquisition. Most of the sources are court records, and it’s illuminating to see what he was reading, how he combined and synthesized what he was read, the ways he wouldn’t ever shut the fuck up, and so on. Plus ça change, and all that.
