For me, it was A Little Life

    1. Not exactly the same as what you’re asking, because I both literally just started it (1 chapter in) and I also fully expect the story to fully grab me.

But I could tell from just the first chapter alone that the writing style of *Sirens of Titan* by Kurt Vonnegut is going to CARRY me through this book, regardless of how much I enjoy it (which again I expect to be a lot lol).

His pacing, phrasing, and comedic timing are just second to none (that I’ve read). It’s very rare that chapter 1 of a book captivates me in any way, but I’ve already felt the pull and I can’t wait to dig into it more.

    2. SkyOfFallingWater on

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (did not really care for her portrayal of the story and thought some weird choices were made, but I adored the writing)

    3. KleinMatterhorn on

Honestly, “The Trial” by F.Kafka never amused me with the storyline itself, but rather as a whole package. I remember reading about how his friend actually was trying to put all the pieces of the work itself in correct order, because it was published post-mortem, so some people debate whether all chapters were published in correct order

    4. Honestly, The Magicians series by Lev Grossman was like this for me at first. Didn’t jive with the story but loved the writing and prose.
Fast forward a few years and it’s now one of my favorite series that I’ve re-read multiple times.
