I do not believe how I’ve missed it for so long, both it and its sequel Paradise Regained. For long years J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion was what I believed to be the best mythic representation of Christian story and the best deep dive into the character of Satan (Morgoth in Tolkien’s Legendarium). But after reading and listening to Paradise Lost (and Regained) for so many times now, I see there was one before. Of course, I like Tolkien no less and think he wrote even more details than this, but the imagery and envy Milton writes about is phenomenal, along with the tragedy of the Fall of Adam and Eve, and the hope that Michael gives to Adam in the end.
I think I now have a new favorite, beside Tolkien as well. I think everyone should read or, preferably, listen to Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. It’s a masterpiece.
