I just finished listening to The Redwinter Chronicles by Ed McDonald and liked them a lot. I particularly enjoyed the first book, and am looking for similar ones to move onto now. Some of the things I liked about it are:

    • Female protagonist
    • lgbtqia+
    • a bit gritty, a bit dark
    • down to earth, grounded in it's reality
    • character driven, with well written, realistic characters who go throough noticeable character growth
    • had a bit of mystery to it
    • a bit of romance
    • rain's self destructive angst which I am totally not a sucker for
    • audio book with a good, solid narrator

I've also read and enjoyed the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, though I do prefer my fantasy to be slightly more off the beaten path than the typical "mountain dwarves, forest elves, dragons and The Bad Guy Race" mold that those books unfortunately fell into.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

    1. I haven’t read The Redwinter Chronicles, but you might like:

      * Sabriel by Garth Nix. First in a series, but I have only read the first three. Female protagonist, a little dark, but still grounded. Has characters that grow and change. I don’t recall there being any LGBTQIA+ representation, though.

      * The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon. Female protagonist, overt asexual and lesbian representation, a bit gritty but not especially dark. The protagonist Paksenarrion develops and grows a lot. No romance.

      * The Fortress series by C. J. Cherryh. Male protagonist, no LGBTQIA+ representation, but *very* down to earth in a way I haven’t really seen other fantasy do. This doesn’t just talk about war, but the logistics of low-tech fantasy warfare. Definitely very character driven, and there’s a lot of noticeable character growth.
