Hey, everyone! I am looking for a book/book series that will give me an experience like when I watched the first season of True Detective. It is my favorite piece of storytelling, and I would love to read a great book that focuses on bleak, provocative, and introspective elements. I love mystery and science-fiction, but I am open to any genre if it fits what I am looking for.
Specific qualities about the show that I loved:
1. Complex Characters
Rust and Marty (main characters) were some of the most compelling personalities I have ever seen. They both have a hubris that makes them incredibly competent at their jobs, that also annihilates their well-being. They criticize each other's perspectives and virtues, despite having essentially nothing that qualifies them to critique someone's honor.
2. Witty Dialogue
I love all the sarcastic and abrasive bickering that Rust and Marty share. A story with a similar sense of humor would be awesome.
3. Philosophical References
While I appreciated listening to Rust ramble about nihilism and other philosophical topics, I thought the "Time is a flat circle" concept was very intriguing. That inspired me to connect my interpretation of that phrase to life outside of the show. I love when a figure of speech or subtext challenges me to expand my understanding of the world.
4. Unrestricted Writer
This show gave me the impression that the writer must have been granted a lot of creative freedom by the producers. It didn't feel like anything was simplified or desensitized to appeal to a wider audience. There were many subtleties and symbols, that challenged the audience to think much deeper than what was in front of them. It was authentic, engaging, and unique… and I bet it was a blast to create. I want to read something that feels experimental, rather than corporate.
Sorry if this request comes up a lot; I know it's a very popular show. Hopefully the qualities I listed help personalize my request. Thank you in advance!
