Fantasy with ambitious goal driven characters, no war/political fantasy

I struggle a lot with fantasy books as I really hate reading about complicated world building and politics and war, a lot of popular fantasy books focus on these things.

I love reading books that follow goal driven, ambitious characters who work extremely hard to climb to the top and do anything to accomplish their goals. A character who maybe starts from the bottom and works extremely hard to rise to the top. I love character focused stories in fantasy worlds, the characters and their relationships with each other are usually more important than the plot for me.
A few years ago I read The Poppy War by RF Kuang and LOVED the first half of that book because we followed the main character as she worked her ass off in school to get into the military academy and then trained all day and night to become at the top of her class. I QUICKLY lost interest in the second half of the book when the war broke out and the tone of the book changed completely.

Characters that have drive and ambition that I have read before include:
– Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
– The Favorites by Layne Fargo
(both these books follow extremely ambitious women in sports)
– The Queens Gambit (TV show character was extremely good at chess)
– Twenty Five, Twenty One (TV show character was a Fencer 🤺)

I think I just want books that have characters like that, but in a fantasy setting because I want to read and enjoy more fantasy!
