I currently teach English in Beijing, and I'd like to read more books by Chinese authors. I'm mainly interested in science fiction and fantasy- I've read several works by Liu Cixin and thoroughly enjoyed them. I get the feeling that I wouldn't be as interested in realistic/historical fiction- I've rarely had success with those.

I know about the major novels like Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I'd like to read them someday, but I'm nervous that they'd be too 'heavy' for my social-media addled brain at the moment. I'm open to reading abridged versions, though!

    1. For fiction fantasy, try The Poppy War series by RF Kuang! I’m not sure if you’re looking for Chinese works translated to English or if you’re open to anything, but RF Kuang is a Chinese author and The Poppy War is based in a fictional version of China. Her books are originally published in English but still worth a shot to check out her books!

    2. Folding Beijing was good.

Also, both Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms are not heavy.
