(Might be important to know but I'm on chapter 4 so please no spoilers after that!)

I'm enjoying the book but this is distracting me.
What is the time period? Are we supposed to assume this is post-9/11? I'm reading "cell phones, screens, computers" but something about the way the characters speak – his mom at the beginning, the Barbour family – makes me feel like they're in the 60s. His mom's backstory pulled me back to this era. The Barbour dad obsessing with sailboats and the sea. Even at the beginning of other novel, the description of the hotel sounded old-timey. I was 13 in the early 2000s and can't fathom my parents and other adults interacting this way lol. Am I nuts? Maybe I have a weird bias because as soon as I started reading I thought it was pre-1970.

    1. Yeah, I think it’s just a way of trying to represent those timeless New England locked-jaw Kennedy-esque WASPs.
