Like the title says I have ADHD, so reading has never really keep my attention. With that said at the start of this year I set out to use my phone less. That has been a wildly successful endeavor. I have stopped doom scrolling and my avg screen time is between 35-70 minutes a day and 95% of that are things I can’t avoid text, phone calls, work, etc.
To replace this time I started reading, mostly to just see if I could. I started with Fourth Wing and to my surprise finished it. Then Iron Flame and I just finished Onyx Storm this morning. I’m mind blown that I have finished 3 lengthy books in about a month. Now I find myself here searching Reddit like a mad man trying to find a new book to start.
Things I have listened to on audiobook or read in the past and enjoyed are:
Books 1 & 2 of King Killer Chronicles – I enjoy the story but struggled for years to finish the first book it defiantly is in the audiobook only family for me.
Magic 2.0 series – enjoyed it I like the plot of the book and the writing style
Bobiverse series – enjoyed it though I found myself lost at times probably due to listening to it on audiobook.
The Martian – It was fine, it just didn’t seem to stay with me. I am pretty sure I have read the book and watched the movie but honestly from what I remember I couldn’t tell you much
Ready Player One – It was been a while but I remember liking it at the time but honestly don’t know that I could recap the book if you asked.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy – Couldn’t enjoy it like I thought I would was a bit disappointed
Dark Matter – Really enjoyed the plot, characters and over all flow of the book. I did predict most of the book after about 5 chapters or so but that’s not uncommon for me. I hated the attempt at a sex scene. Unrelated but couldn’t get into the tv series lol.
And as mentioned The Empyrean series to date – Really enjoyed it, I really liked the modern sarcastic banter between characters. The characters seemed super relatable.
Obviously based on the past reads I lean into Fantasy but I wouldn’t mind venturing outside of that it’s not really my wife’s thing. She likes to read Colleen Hoover books (I’m pretty sure she’s read all of them) that seems to be her preferred style. I like the idea of find books that we both would enjoy so we can read and discuss. I also don’t mind having books that I would enjoy.
Things I absolutely don’t like but always seem to be recommend by friends my age:
Books about history
Books about “celebrities”
Anything that makes you say – “You just have to make it through this part then…”
Characters with stupidly hard names to read, where every time you see it you read it a different way hoping to land on the right one.
Book series that are great but not finished or going to be finished anytime soon.
