Dark and gritty books WITHOUT rape

I get the feeling that a lot of dark and gritty books, have rape scenes. "Look, this world is dark and fucked up, see here is someone being raped". I do not want that. If a story is about rape, don't shy away from it, it's one of the worst things you can do to a person and you need to show how vile it is. Using it to set a tone, or as a plot device, however, leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
