My mom and I have became unlikely reading partners during a difficult week in the hospital. During the stay, I (30M) read aloud to Mom from Anne of Green Gables, and she read a bit to me when she could. I enjoyed the book a fair bit, especially as a way to share in something that my mom and sisters have all loved. But I'm not quite ready to jump into Little Women or whatever the natural follow-up would be. I'm looking for something we might both enjoy.

In some ways, we have mutually exclusive taste in books: I like fantasy (and she doesn't) and she likes womens Christian fiction (not my thing). There is overlap where we both like stories of real life adventures and exploration, such as this account of Ernest Shackleton (who made three expeditions into Antarctica in the early twentieth century). I think it's possible we might find some old literary books to enjoy, as well.

I'd hope for fairly tame recommendations: I can't imagine reading anything too violent, or at all smutty to my sick mom. I just couldn't do it! Anything too controvertial or political is probably not quite right for this particular moment, either.

I might try The Little Prince next, though I think it's a childrens' book. We've both read Narnia, so I thought of expanding to Watership Down or something might work, but Mom's not really drawn in by the talking animals.
