Every time I drive across the country and see Chinese restaurants in the middle of Iowa or Utah I say to myself, "i'd love to read a book about that family".
Same goes for little motels. There must be so much crazy stuff that has happened at these places over the years. Both good and bad.
Has anyone ever come across a book like this? Doesn't have to be a restaurant or a motel. I guess I'm looking for kind of a tell-all about a profession I know nothing about.

Chopsuey Nation by Anne Hui. Alternates her personal family history and visits to various Chinese restaurants across Canada including some really remote places.
Not exactly what you asked for, but there is an older book called Life Behind the Lobby, about Indian-Americans owning motels – at the time the book was written, half of motels in the U.S. were owned by Indian immigrants, many of whom were from one region in India. Author is Pawan Dhingra. It was a fascinating read.
