For my past couple of reads, I keep unexpectedly stumbling into this trope where the male love interest is a rude bad boy, or just really dark and mysterious. While it’s not a book-ruiner for me, I’ve never loved it, and I’ve grown particularly weary of it now.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are plenty of female-led fantasy books on my to-be-read that don’t have this trope, but I would like to have explicit confirmation of some considering that this trope keeps coming as a surprise to me.

Looking for a fantasy that has a romantic subplot (NOT a straight up romantasy) with a female protagonist, female author preferred, adult or YA both acceptable. Just want the male love interest to maybe be funny or sweet or shy or any personality which isn’t…that.

Tress of the Emerald Sea or Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson are both romantic subplots and standalone fantasy novels. Tress is the main character in her novel, and Yumi and Painter share the spotlight in theirs.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen is more like a fantasy rom-com, but there’s an overarching story that’s happening aside from the couple getting together. Hart *seems* like he’s going to be this tall, brooding love interest, but he turns out to be kind, sweet, and incredibly emotional, and I loved it.
