My dad and I bond over a mutual love of a good book so I’m pregaming recommendations for his birthday in a couple months. He loves crime/thriller books, LOVED Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and its sequels. (Actually started him on a new interest for Swedish media) I’m hoping for something with similar complexity, though it can be different content-wise.
My top two ideas right now are Gone Girl or Bad Monkey. I read Gone Girl and while it’s a great read, the ending fell flat for me and didn’t give me the “holy cow didn’t see that coming!!” thriller reaction. Still an okay book though. My other thought is Bad Monkey, but I’ve only watched the TV show and don’t know anything about the book.
Other notes: Despite his love for GWADT, my dad doesn’t love explicit violent content so feel free to pitch “tamer” mysteries too. He likes Sherlock Holmes but I think he’s read them all. He is also a really smart guy who likes to try to figure out the answer before the detective (who doesn’t lol), so maybe a “harder” ending to guess.
