    1. Gideon the ninth if you want a deep chaotic fantasy that’s gay and fun and independent but not romantic

I recommend it a lot because it is my favorite FF Romance but Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper, I’m not quite sure if Emmy is explicitly happy being single (it’s been a while since I read it) but she is pretty independent.

    3. Two examples of the trope:

Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date by Ashley Herring Blake

      Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner

**This is How You Lose the Time War,** you’ll see this happen in real-time in a series of letters between two adversaries. Great book.

    5. *The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks Dalton.* It’s not a romance, but it does have the exact relationship you are looking for.

It’s a dystopian novel set in Florida when climate change is reclaiming the environment, communities are being destroyed and there are climate refugees fleeing.

It follows the life of Wanda, a girl born in and named after a cat 5 hurricane. She is fiercely independent, and gets close with few people but in the most meaningful ways. The walls down vulnerability comes when she is finally trying to survive on her own.

My favourite book and it is amazing.
