I'm sure there's a more succinct way ti describe this type of book I'm looking for.
I read Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime, and Obsession by Rachel Monroe. Each chapter was about a different woman obsessed with a different crime or crime-related topic, and it all built towards an analysis of why women are drawn to the true crime community now. An added bonus was the riveting frame narrative of Monroe at the biggest true crime convention in the US.
I'm currently reading Black Pill: How I Witnessed the Darkest Corners of the Internet Come to Life, Poison Society, and Capture American Politics by Elle Reeve, and I am completely hooked. The prologue was a harrowing account of her family being stalked by a man taking his petty grievance with them to the absolute extreme, which she links to by bitter, petty, angry males populating toxic online spaces (and, you know, having lots of fun on a certain day in early January, 2021.) Then, the first chapter was on the creator of 8chan, and it was absolutely fascinating.
So, does anyone have any suggestions like these? I love that each chapter is different, because that really holds my attention and makes me unable to put the book down. And I love it when different parts come together perfectly in the end.
Final note: I read Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell and didn't like it (I know, I know, I'm the only one.) A lot of it felt random, and I felt she inserted herself into the reporting a bit too much.
