Travel writing, not guidebook/"what I did type" stories. I'm thinking a modern day Hemingway, Twain, Stienbeck, or even Krakauer.
Someone who takes you to the soul of a place. Do they use some artistic license? Maybe. But their story is what transports you- not just to a physical location but a sensory experience and a state of mind.

Rinker Buck has two books – one about the Oregon trail and another about the Mississippi River. He recreates those trips in the modern world. They’re very cool
