I liked the novel 1984 by George Orwell, and since then whenever I search for similar recommendations I come across the novel "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". Has anyone read this book? Is it similar to Orwell's writing or at least have a similar premise?

It has very little in common with 1984.
It’s a collection of short stories. I didn’t find it to be anything to write home about. Try **Brave New World** or **We** if you liked **1984**.
Just my opinion, but I’d give it a miss. The title is enough.
I did read it long ago and it has mercifully faded in my memory.
The story is existential body horror sci-fi.
It’s very creepy.
I happen to think Harlan is brilliant, so…
I read the short story with this title. It was dystopian, creepy and depressing.
It’s a short story so you know takes less than 30 mins to read and you can easily find it free online. May as well if you’re interested. I think it’s great
The short story itself is PHENOMENAL. And what an ending!!!
That particular short is terrifying, especially when considering the current rise of AI.
It’s not very similar except that it has a very bleak tone and you can tell it was written during the Cold War. But as others have said, it’s short and also a classic in its own right, so might as well read it!
If you liked 1984, I would also recommend:
* Amatka by Karin Tidbeck. It was recently published but has some similar themes such as control of language.
* Julia by Sandra Newman. This is 1984 but from Julia’s perspective.
* I second the recommendation of We. It’s in the public domain so you can find ebook copies free online, legally.
do it. it’s not a novel–it’s a short story that’s available for free online. i enjoyed it, and it feels more relevant now than ever before because it’s about AI.
