I love fantasy and sf but dislike a lot of popular works in the genres. I want something where the quality of writing is a bit more literate.
Like: David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas, etc), China Mieville (Perdido Street Station), Michael Chabon (Yiddish Policeman’s Union), David Foster Wallace (Infinte Jest), some of Dan Simmons (Hyperion, Olympos, Summer of Night), Ursula K Leguin, Octavia Butler, Vernor Vinge, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Neal Stephenson.
Dislike: Name of the Wind (hated!), First Law, Harry Dresden. I used to like wheel of time as a teen but not so much now. I didn’t really like Brandon Sanderson’s writing style in the last wheel of time books. I heard his world building in his own series makes up for it but for me the prose is more important.
