They weren't literally the same character, but I'm imagining someone like Hugh Jackman in The Fountain. He began as a brutish conquistador and ended as a space yogi. I'm fascinated by characters that actually, truly grow and don't spend their lives being roughly who they were when they were twenty.
What's the most drastic case of personal evolution you've ever seen in a main character?
Bonus points for stories where the character has an especially long life (centuries, even) and has had the time to be several very different people along the way.
