I recently talked with my girlfriend about the impact that world-famous book series had on us as teenagers and we were wondering if any books today have as much cultural impact as Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games etc. today. We couldn't really find anything comparable. I'm also a german teacher, but most of my students don't read that much and those few that do read some of the series mentioned above, or are into classics like Kafka, Orwell and Lovecraft.

    1. A song of ice and fire (game of thrones)? The books are big but the show had a gigantic impact. Shame the series is not complete and the last couple of seasons had to be messed up because of that.

    2. People here will talk about Fourth wing series and other things like that…. Imo it is not at all the same quality as what we knew with a Harry Potter or a Lord of the rings. That’s poor writing needing “spice” to find an existence (please note that “spicy” meant “sexy” some years ago, now that means “porn”, and it seems that’s what fantasy is today : plot holes, capricious “young adult” characters, harems or reversed harems, poor writing, but, well, let’s give it a 4/5 because 🥵🔥🥵 🤤 tbh btw y’know).

    3. Wheel of time has the scope, but it’s not as targeted to kids as HP. Epic, epic read, though. In terms of publicity and marketing, Star Wars is worth a mention.

    4. The Hunger Games is the closest we’ll get, maybe ever. Media today is too rapid, and moves in to retread ground too quickly to allow a series to breathe like before. See:booktok.

The instant that a new novel take on fantasy fiction releases and is popularised, there are 50 others just like it and what ‘goes viral’ is the genre and not the series.

Plus screen time is a massive chunk of people’s lives now, and that’s mostly short form content. The closest thing we have to a short form saga is (no joke) Skibidi Toilet.
