Not really older novels, but they take place in older times. ‘The Lion Women of Tehran’ follows the friendship of two women beginning in 1950’s Iran, by Marjan Kamali. ‘Snowflower and the Secret Fan’ by Lisa See is about the friendship between two girls from different backgrounds in 19th century China.

Not an older novel by any means, but I recently really enjoyed Beautiful World Where Are You by Sally Rooney which you might enjoy if you don’t mind some romance also happening at the same time!

There’s a fantastic trio of teenaged girl friends in Joy Williams’s The Quick and the Dead, a novel I love but don’t see recommended on this thread ever.
