Hey everyone,
I’m looking for audiobook recommendations that feature weird, reality-bending events that are being studied, investigated, or confronted in some way. I love the vibe of the video games Control and Quantum Break, as well as the movie Annihilation—stories where science (or some kind of structured approach) is being used to try and explain things that defy normal understanding.
I am looking for books where:
– Strange, unexplained phenomena are being studied or dealt with
– Science is being used to try and make sense of the
– There’s a mix of mystery, sci-fi, and maybe some horror
– Could involve secret government/private agencies, but doesn’t have to
– An SCP Foundation-style or X-Files vibe
For example, I really liked the first book in The Dresden Files and plan to continue the series, so I’m open to things that lean into the supernatural as well, as long as they fit that structured investigation of the unknown vibe.
Ideally looking audiobooks with good narration, but will read physical copies too
Any recommendations?

“Under the dome “ Stephen King meets half or more of the criteria book only not show
# The Fold by Peter Clines
The audio book is around 10 hours and has a great narrator.
The backstory: A government-funded project has developed a teleportation device—but something about it doesn’t add up. A brilliant investigator with a photographic memory is brought in to figure out what’s *really* going on.
Why I think you will like it: The book has a great mix of scientific inquiry, mystery, and eerie, reality-warping events that escalate into full-blown horror and sci-fi. It’s got an SCP Foundation/X-Files feel.
The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch
The Rook by Daniel O’Malley is about a secret British government organization that investigates supernatural phenomena. More comedic in nature.
The Three Body Problem trilogy by Liu Cixin follows a Chinese scientist investigating unexplained phenomena and a secret society, with a heavy focus on physics and philosophy. Also mixes in real world history of China, particularly the cultural revolution.
Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer!
It’s a good deal different from the movie and it’s a 4 book series at the moment.
Do not sleep on this book!
