I recently lost my 4 year old daughter to cancer. I’m not the big reader, but I’m considering it as a way of both distracting myself but also to potentially use it as some sort of therapy. I have a feeling that I would benefit from connecting with a character going through the same or something similar. What are your thoughts and potential suggestions?
For clarification, I’m also seeing a real psychiatrist.
My preferred genre is fantasy, but I’m open to try new genres as well.

So sorry for your loss! You might connect with Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova.
*Hamnet* by Maggie O’Farrell comes to mind — immensely beautiful story about a family grieving the loss of their young son (mostly from the mother’s point of view, if I remember correctly). It’s technically historical fiction about Shakespeare (who wrote Hamlet about that son), so it FEELS kind of fantastical.
I’m so, so sorry for your loss.
Child of my Heart by Alice McDermott comes to mind. I’m so sorry for your loss
Death be Not Proud by John Gunther. It’s a memoir of him losing a son to cancer.
I’m so sorry for your loss
Memoir genre: Rob Delaney: A Heart That Works
