Book like Martyr! (Akbar) But workplace appropriate?

I think the character development and topics that Martyr! seem to touch on, would be what I’m looking for, but I also would still like to play it on speaker while doing the dishes and not worry about profanities with my children around.

Is there a similar book that would touch on personal grief with that depth of character, but have less mature content? I loved the frankness of the main character, but need the vocabulary toned down if that makes sense.
