In Russia, high schoolers have to read Crime and Punishment, War and Peace, We by Zamyatin, Master and Margarita. It was a shock for me to learn that few people read these books in the US. At the same time I was in my 30's when I discovered Steinbeck.
What are the classics from your home country that everyone should read and would enjoy as an adult?

I’m from the US so I can’t add anything yet, but I think US schools have a big preference for assigning shorter books. Not sure if it’s because of time constraints or if they don’t trust the students to actually read long books, but we were only ever assigned shorter classics in high school!
