Books about the history of white people using blackface

Hopefully written by minorities, and hopefully it explores the use of blackface in art, and hopefully written somewhat recently, but none of that is an absolute requirement.

I am doing a personal (non school related, I’m 35) research project on John Berryman’s Dream Songs, in which he uses blackface, and I want to better understand the how and why of his use of blackface in that book of poems (not looking to defend his use of blackface in any way, by the way, just want to better understand it).
