I know that a lot of books have a deep impact on people and are considered must reads. So I’m curious if there are any short stories / novellas that would fit the bill? Stories that can carry the same weight just in less words.
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King

My favorite short story is The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin. It can be found fairly easily online.

My favorite is The Horse by Willy Vlautin. Came out last year and deserves way more attention.

every single story in ghostroots by ‘pemi aguda is absolutely mesmerizing. i normally can’t fully immerse myself in short stories but i loved it deeply. cannot stress it enough!
i also adore the entire collection in the anthology through the night like a snake: latin american horror stories. darkly gorgeous and all so unique to each other.

Désirée’s Baby by Kate Chopin and The Box Social by James Reaney.
Both are very short. Both are utterly heartbreaking.
