I am currently obsessed with red dead redemption 2 – everything about the game, including the gritty, grim, sometimes creepy, and always beautiful atmosphere; the nature, landscapes, and wildlife; the complicated characters; the adventure; the survival; and the historical western setting is perfect to me.
I am also currently obsessed with romance novels, or at least books that include some sort of romantic b plot – I get very frustrated by poorly written romance books where the quality of the story, character development, and writing all take a backseat to romance – so I’ve tended to like best books that are first and foremost a good story, and secondarily involve a good and compelling romance, even if it’s not the main driver of the story. Something I liked recently was Uprooted by Naomi Novik (first and foremost a good fantasy, secondarily has a good romance subplot) – but that’s just an example.
Given how specific this request is, I’d take anything western that’s good and captivating the way rdr2 is, with any amount of romance at all. I’d say the thing I like most about rdr2 is the atmosphere and western historical setting, so any book like that with any hint of a love story would be a win. Maybe this isn’t possible, but this sub is pretty amazing so I thought I’d try. Thanks guys!

Lonesome Dove is one of the most famous western novels and I think the atmosphere is pretty close to RDR2. Characters, scenery descriptions, and just general portrayal of that era are all fantastic. Just finished rereading it myself.
It’s portrayal of romance is complicated, but it is there. It definitely takes a back seat though. If you’re not limited to classic romance though, the relationships between the characters are incredibly diverse and complex
