Hi, I just read P&P for the first time and really liked it! Especially Austen’s style of writing which I was not expecting to enjoy so much. I’m very new to Classic/old literature type books, but since this one went well for me and was easier to read than I had expected, I would like to try a stab at another. I had at one point read quite a bit of Count of Monte Cristo, I can’t remember what page I got to (must have been at least 250 or 300) when there was a section of the book that got sooo ungodly slow and boring that I put it down. It made me sad because up until that point I was LOVING it and was getting a lot of laughs in. I will go back to CoMC, but it is a very long book, and my memory is terrible so I would definitely have to start it from the beginning. Anyway, what would you suggest I read next?

Jane Eyre! You won’t regret it! I love it so much I own 7 copies
If you haven’t, read Rebecca. I loved that book so much when I first read it when I was 16 yo and then I’ve read it recently and I enjoyed it as well.
Elizabeth Gaskell – North and South and I especially loved Wives and Daughters
Would second the previous recommendation for Jane Eyre and would also add Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier but this one will be quite different from Austen’s work.
Jane Austen’s other books are also wonderful: Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion
If you haven’t seen any of the miniseries based on the books, then you are missing out. They are equally great!
Angel by Elizabeth Taylor is an overlooked gem and so bitingly sharp. I also like her more subdued books like At Mrs Lippincote’s.
