Barbara Tuchman’s ‘A Distant Mirror’, very interesting and readable historical narrative (14th century).

Assuming you’re looking for non fiction, Montaillou by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie.
For fiction, Ken Follett’s Kingsbridge novels and/or The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.
