I am assuming based on the lack of specificity that you’re not looking for anything overly niche
Mary Beard’s *SPQR* would be a good option for Rome. For Greece I really like *Introducing the Ancient Greeks: From Bronze Age Seafarers to Navigators of the Western Mind.* I feel like this one really connects the dots in an accessible, readable way.
The other approach is a good biography instead of the survey type books. There is something about getting immersed in person’s story that allows you to absorb a lot of context at the same time. I especially enjoyed Hannibal: Rome’s Greatest Enemy by Philip Freeman.
