The quote is something akin to “A boy does not need a father, but a good father is irreplaceable” or “invaluable” or something similar.
Was thinking it was in East of Eden by Steinbeck, so I reread that. Then “Lincoln in the Bardo” by Saunders. It didn’t show up in either. Maybe a Stephen King quote? Tom Robbins? Something else? I can’t find it on the internet and am not sure which other books I read that it could be from. Does it stick out to anyone else?

Stephen King, The Stand: “A boy does not need a father unless he is a good father, but a good father is indispensable.”
