My husband hasn't historically been a big reader, but he is on a quest to spend less time scrolling on his phone or playing video games. He has expressed an interest in trying out Westerns as a new form of entertainment. Despite being a library assistant myself, Western is one of the genres I know very little about, so I haven't been much help in narrowing down the options. Here is some info about my husband to give an idea of what he might like:

    • He hasn't read a ton but enjoyed Ted Dekker's books when he was in high school. His favourites were the Circle trilogy and the Paradise trilogy.
    • As far as other media goes, he has enjoyed shows like Breaking Bad, The Last of Us, Hell on Wheels, etc. He doesn't mind dark and gritty.
    • He tends to enjoy morally grey characters and well-crafted villains. He would enjoy stuff with lots of action and bank heists/train robberies etc.
    • Something fast-paced and not terribly long would probably be a good fit. Nothing with super flowery prose, but not too simple or cliche either.

Any ideas based on the above would be super helpful! Thanks in advance.

The Gunslinger by Stephen King is an easy read and it’s also the first book in the Dark Tower series. It’s not pure western, more western fantasy, but full of action and great characters.
