Hey, first time poster on this subreddit.
I picked up a copy of Great Expectations because I was considering the possibility of studying Dickens for an introductory class in the Fall.
I liked the writing style— the chapter lengths made it an easy book to get through. The characters were exceptional: Estella, Joe, and Mr. Jaggers could carry their scenes.
That said, overall I liked it like a Goodreads (3/5 stars) sort of deal. I’m not 100% sure why it didn’t click. The middle did drag, but even the more exciting parts didn’t quite capture my imagination.
With this experience, I’m a little bit turned off with Dickens but maybe I’m a little bit presumptuous.
I have two questions. A, is there another angle I should try with Dickens? Some friends have insisted that Dickens’ other works are better. B, even if I did like some of his other books, would it be crazy to take an entire class dedicated to Dickens if I thought Great Expectations was a 6/10?
Tl;dr – GE is a 3/5, will I still like his other books? if I did, should I take an entire class on him?
