Looking for memoirs about the dark side/underbelly of things such as prison life, gang life, living on the streets in places like LA or SF, etc.
I love a good crazy, shocking story. Pretty open minded as long as it’s written in a first person memoir fashion.
I have read Always Running, Fish: A Memoir of a Boy In a Mans Prison, and Papillon.

In the realm but maybe not exactly what you’re looking for I constantly recommend “Down and Out in Paris and London” by George Orwell. It’s his memoir of his time being poor and destitute in the respective cities. It’s fascinating, heart breaking, hysterical, it’s everything. Just brilliant.
You might enjoy *Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member* by Sanyika Shakur—it’s a raw, intense account of gang life in South Central LA. Another gripping read is *Solitary* by Albert Woodfox, which details his decades in solitary confinement at Angola Prison. If you’re into shocking and gritty stories, *A Piece of Cake* by Cupcake Brown is a wild ride through addiction, homelessness, and crime. Hope you find something that fits your taste!
