As the title suggests, is reading books in a language other than their original really worth it or am I wasting my time? I have read The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Metamorphoses and similar works in English mostly Penguin Classics editions. While I enjoyed them, I often wonder whether the English translations are only half as good as the originals. Do these English translations capture the essence of the originals?
