Hello, I’m looking for a personal development style book that discusses this topic and other similar emotional needs. Not really feeling any non-fiction/fiction novels with similar themes but rather advice-styled books. Not to get too personal but for context, I’m in my young 20s, my father left when I was a kid, and my mother just wasn’t really the greatest person. I started reading “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents”, but I would rather have a book that touches more on the lack of parents entirely and how to grow emotionally from a combination of trauma and emotional emptiness at times. I also looked at “Dad, How Do I?”, but I’m not really a religious person and the author tends to reference how God helped him a lot there. Regardless, feel like I missed out on some life lessons, tips, etc. and I’m getting to the age where I need to start making big, life-altering decisions involving finances, relationships, career, etc. So Finding a book that explains how to better myself, form better relationships, understand how these life events typically impact people’s development, and how to not let your past define you seems like a good start. You know that kind of thing. Thanks friends.

This is How by Augusten Burroughs. It actually says straight out that parents are nice, not necessary.

I’m going to get downvoted into oblivion for this, but 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson is exactly what you describe

    3. How to Win Friends and Influence People.

I know the title sounds manipulative, but that’s not the angle. It taught me a lot of valuable skills when I was in similar shoes.

    4. I’d recommend [Teal Swan’s books](https://tealswan.com/books/). Pick anything that sparks your interest.

Most of her books cover many deep and important topics and also include advice and techniques to help you survive and thrive in this world.
