As a huge fan of sci-fi I’ve wanted to delve into more sci-fi series. But one sci-fi series that I’ve seen get more praise than any other series is The Culture by Ian M. Banks. I was wondering for those who have read it, do you think this is some of the best sci-fi ever made? Is it worth committing to this entire series? What are the pro’s and cons. I’m fairly young in my early 20’s and love sci-fi but does this series pander to a more older mature audience? I’m curious to know everyone’s thought on The Culture series as I never see it talked about here?

    1. You don’t have to commit to the whole series. Trying reading a book and see if you like it.

    2. IMO: it is one of the best. And one of the best things about it is you really don’t have to “commit.” The series is a bunch of self-contained stories. I would read “The Player of Games” to get an idea of what Banks is capable of, as starting at the very beginning is a little rough.

It’s very space opera and it can be dark, but it is ostensibly about the dealings of a Utopian society in its otherwise grimdark universe, which makes for a pretty unique contrast. Strong recommend.

    3. The Culture series is definitely up there as some of the best sci-fi, but it’s not for everyone. It’s big on philosophy, politics, and deep worldbuilding rather than fast-paced action, so if you’re into thought-provoking, complex narratives, it’s absolutely worth it. The books aren’t a traditional series—you can read them in almost any order—which makes it easy to try one before committing. Some people find the writing dense, but if you like expansive, intelligent sci-fi with a bit of dark humor, you’ll probably love it.
