I don’t think I would like fantasy at all. I go through phases on Reddit where I’ll go through rabbit holes of unsolved mysteries or murders, so I feel I’d like mysteries or horror. However, as my gf has told me, horror can be really hit or miss, and I think I agree. I bought a short story book from Stephen King hoping it would do the trick and I thought it was awfully written. I want complicated characters, realistic dialogue, and to be invested.

I recommend anything by Haruki Murakami, he got me into reading and now I’ve read over 20 of his books (I also read other authors). My favorites are After Dark and Sputnik Sweetheart but I started with Norwegian Wood and highly recommend that too

I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai (podcast host investigates cold case, sort of)

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green (influencer comes across strange statue, weird stuff happens)

Night Film by Marisha Pessl (this one is a more niche pick – famous reclusive film director’s daughter found dead, journalist investigates)

    3. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson. It’s a mystery with thriller elements, and was very popular. There are three books written by the original author, later books in the series were written posthumously.
